Tips for Staining This Summer

With Memorial Day just around the corner, Kush Paint is excited to start working on our summer projects. Staining wood for decks and docks is certainly on our list and probably yours too. Here’s some tips to help you get started with your staining project!

  1. Check the weather. The weather forecast can have a lot to do with how stain adheres to wood. Damp wood can leave stain with cracks and that will cause peeling just a few weeks later. You wouldn’t want to be stuck re-staining midsummer after all your hard work, so be sure to plan around mother nature.
  2. Just like walls, prep your wood. A clean surface free of dirt, dust, and dog hair will help your stain set in and leave a smooth finish. But, if you need to power wash your deck or dock before staining, remember tip #1 and wait for the wood to be completely dry. This may take up to a few days.
  3. Ask an expert about your wood type and stain color pairing. Many woods will alter the color of the stain after in dries and it might not look exactly how you imagined it to. Sampling your stain on a small piece of the same type of wood is never a bad idea either.

We hope these tips help you create your best outdoor space. And of course, we recommend you use the highest quality of stain (Kush Paint Oil Based Stain being one of them!). And as always, we are always here to help!
